Choosing your cemetery: A practical guide

Choosing your cemetery: A practical guide

By: Rosée Tremblay, Family Consultant.

Our cemetery is the place where our urn or coffin will be laid to rest. When faced with the uncertainty of making a decision, many words emerge: family, tradition, accessibility, serenity, security, nature, and many others. In this article, we will help you clarify your choice.

First of all, here's a link to a lexicon of funeral words that will be used: https://www.memoria.ca/en/glossary.html.

How do I make the right choice?

Here's a short guide including the steps to follow.

Talk to your loved ones to find out where your family members are buried? Being in the family plot (a place in a cemetery purchased by a family for burial purposes) often creates a sense of well-being and keeps traditions alive.

  1. Make one or more visits to consider accessibility (proximity to home, or freeways for those further away or with reduced mobility). Some people prefer cemeteries surrounded by trees, while others prefer those bordered by water.

  2. Compare the different options and decide which would suit you best.

  3. Meet with an advisor to discuss your questions. To continue, below is an explanation of how it works.

What are the options at Memoria?

  1. MEMORIA cemetery in Laval:

Where? 2500 Avenue des Perrons, Laval, QC.

What makes it special? A place in the heart of nature, combining tradition and modernity, offering a peaceful and serene space for meditation.

  2. Mausolée St-Martin in Laval:

Where? 2159 Boul.St-Martin Est, Laval, QC.

What makes it special? It's an elegant, four-storey indoor cemetery offering a variety of burial options, including crypts and niches for caskets or urns. Family visitation is available year-round, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., including holidays.

How does a purchase work?

When you meet with your consultant, he or she will discuss a number of things with you, all of which will be recorded on a burial purchase contract or concession contract, depending on the term used.

This is a very long-term contract that has a duration and therefore an expiry date according to the cemetery's regulations. This contract allows the burial of a coffin or urn, while implying a maintenance obligation for the cemetery.

What happens when the contract expires?

There is often a renewal option that offers the concession-holder (the person responsible for the plot) or his or her estate the chance to extend the contract for a new term for an additional cost.

When a plot is not renewed and is due to expire, the cemetery takes steps to locate the descendants of the buried person. It consults its permanent register of the deceased and their families.

After a certain period, the cemetery may contact the Court to obtain authorization to recover the plot and proceed with a new burial.
